We are at the beginning of a new phase of individually tailored medical diagnosis and treatment, and advances in biotechnology are the driving forces behind it. In addition to medicine, DNA, RNA and Proteomic analysis are being used in forensics, evolution studies and environmental conservation. It has been estimated by New York State that the biotechnology industry will create 20,000 jobs per year.
The Biotechnology Associate Degree (A.S.) program at NCCC will prepare students to transfer to a four year college or university to pursue a baccalaureate degree or higher. Biotechnologists will gain employment in both the public and private sector in research, crime and medical laboratories, educational institutions and biotechnology companies. The program provides a basic foundation, including biology, chemistry, cell/molecular biology, microbiology, bioinformatics and biotechnology. The program-specific courses emphasize hands-on applications of the techniques needed in the laboratory setting, including DNA, RNA and Protein manipulation and analysis.
Program Goals and Objectives
- Graduates will be able to perform technical procedures such as DNA extraction and characterization, electrophoresis, cloning, polymerase chain reaction, protein isolation and purification.
- Graduates will understand the basic principles of genomics, proteomics and systems approaches in biotechnology and the basic bioinformatics-based analysis used to approach them.
- With these new techniques come new ethical challenges, and our graduates will evaluate the societal issues and implications of biotechnology.
This new program is all about getting students into the lab, working on techniques relevant to the field. Our area is poised to be a major job site for Biotechnology, with investment from the Buffalo Billion initiative creating a new Life Sciences Innovation center and incentives for private Biotech industries. We want our students to be prepared to take advantage of those opportunities.
