Nursing Scholarships

Below are a list of Nursing scholarships that can be applied for online using the AwardSpring Scholarship system login on the right hand side. There are several other scholarships available that are non degree specific as well.

Barbara Burns-Higgins Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1997 in memory of Dr. Barbara Burns-Higgins, a professor in the NCCC Nursing division and the 1989-90 recipient of the State University’s Chancellor’s Award of Excellence in Teaching. 

Frequency: Fall and spring semester

Criteria:

  1. Applicant must be a current or incoming NCCC student enrolled
    in the Nursing Program.
  2. Applicant must have and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  3. Applicant must have experience working in a health care facility either in a volunteer or employee capacity and include in your essay information on your volunteer or employment history in a health care facility.
  4. Priority will be given to non-traditional students.

 

Dolce/Valvo Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1991 by Kathy Dolce, former Chair of the Health and Physical Education Department at NCCC, and her sister Jean Doctor. They established this scholarship as a way to thank their parents, who were strong advocates of education, for providing them with the opportunity to obtain an education.

Frequency: Fall and spring semesters

Criteria:

  1. Applicant must have and maintain a 2.75 GPA.
  2. Applicant must be a sophomore enrolled in Nursing
  3. Attach two (2) letters of recommendation; one from an in-college teaching faculty, counselor, or librarian and one from the community where applicant may have participated in activities in the community or served in a volunteer capacity.

 

NYS Federation of Home Bureau Scholarship – Niagara County

The local chapter of this statewide organization raises scholarship money through memorials and anniversary gifts to the group.

Frequency: Fall only; if not applicants, then it carries over to spring

Criteria:

  1. Applicant must be enrolled full time in the Nursing curriculum for at least 1 year (either at NCCC or transferred from elsewhere carrying a minimum of 9 credits in addition to work/study or internship.
  2. Scholarship award is based on academic achievement.
  3. Applicants must have and maintain a 2.85 GPA.
  4. Niagara County resident
  5. (1) letter of recommendation from an NCCC faculty member regarding the character and academic abilities of applicant.
  6. Include in your essay information about any economic disadvantages you may have encountered along with demonstrated experiences and activities in selected field as well as your career goals.

 

Edward & Frances Pawenski Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in loving memory of one of Niagara County Community College’s founding Trustees; Edward J. Pawenski, and his dedicated wife Frances. In 1958, as a member of the Niagara County board of Supervisors, Mr. Pawenski initiated the resolution to study if a community college would be viable in Niagara County.

Mr. Pawenski proudly served on the Board of Trustees of the College from its founding in 1962 until 2012, serving 19 of those years as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Mr. and Mrs. Pawenski were dedicated to the students of NCCC and this scholarship honors that dedication.

Frequency: Fall and spring semesters

Criteria

  1. Applicant must be a current NCCC student enrolled in the Nursing program
  2. Applicant must have and/or maintain a 3.0 GPA.
  3. It is preferred that the applicant have experience working or volunteering in the health care field or as a first responder.
  4. Include in your essay career goals, community service and NCCC involvement.

 

Stella and Clayton Quiett Memorial Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Susan Quiett Manning in memory of Stella Quiett, who came from Canada in 1928 at age 18 to become a registered nurse. Despite many changes in her field over the years, she remained competent and compassionate in her work.

Frequency: Fall semester only

Criteria:

  1. Applicant must be a current NCCC student entering their second year in the Nursing program.
  2. Applicant must have and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  3. Include in your essay a paragraph describing the reasons for becoming a nurse and the aspects of patient care you believe are the most important.
  4. Submit one (1) letter of recommendation from a faculty member regarding your character and academic ability.

 

Patricia Siola Distinguished Alumni Award

Dr. Patricia L. Siola, NCCC Distinguished Alumna, established this scholarship in 2000 to assist children or grandchildren of NCCC Alumni in their pursuit of education at Niagara County Community College.

Frequency: Fall semester only

Criteria:

  1. Applicant must be a full time NCCC sophomore (24 or more NCCC credits.) enrolled in the Nursing program.
  2. Applicant must have and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  3. Applicant must be a Niagara County resident.
  4. Applicant must be a child or grandchild of an NCCC alumnus.
  5. Incorporate into your essay the name of the NCCC Alumnus parent or grandparent and the year they graduated.

 

Dr. Frances J. Sorge-Dotton Scholarship

The scholarship was established in the name of Dr. Frances J. Sorge-Dotton by her husband, Robert Lawrence Dotton, to help students who like her, carry multiple responsibilities while trying to better themselves.

Frequency: Fall and spring semesters

Criteria:

  1. Applicant must be a current or incoming student to NCCC enrolled in the Nursing program attending either full or part-time.
  2. Scholarship award is based on financial need.
  3. Continuing students must have a minimum GPA of 2.7.
  4. Incorporate into your essay information on your short and long term nursing career goals.
