Overview
The Dietetics Studies Associate in Science degree program lays the foundation for a comprehensive study of the relationship between nutrition and disease, proper food preparation, and food chemistry.
Dietetics is the science of how food and nutrition affect human health.
The Department of Labor projects employment to grow 16% through 2024.
Upon successful completion of the program, students may continue their education through transfer to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics. After further study and accredited supervised training, the student is eligible to take the registration exam.
Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations may vary by state.
Program Goals and Objectives
- To assist students in meeting General Education requirements.
- To educate students in the fundamental study of food and its physiological effects in all stages of life.
- To prepare students for transfer into a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics, after which students may become registered dietitians.

Lindsey Parisse ’21
“SUNY Niagara is preparing me to reach my professional goals by offering courses that teach the foundations in Nutrition, Dietetics, and related Sciences. The Dietetics program offers a well-rounded selection of courses to better understand how our diet impacts our health and our well-being. My goal is to start a career as a Registered Dietitian, and help others by promoting smart dietary choices and healthy living. In addition to coursework, SUNY Niagara has given me the opportunity to coach volleyball as part of the SUNY Niagara “Girl Power” program. Being part of this program not only allows me to help young girls learn volleyball, but also provides valuable experience in mentoring and promoting a healthy lifestyle.”
Professional Preparation
The program begins the professional preparation of dietitian’s and nutritionists working in variety of settings such as:
- Clinical nutrition
- Food service systems management
- Government
- Hospitals
- Nursing and residential care facilities
- Outpatient care center
- Public and community health nutrition
